Do you qualify?
A range of factors are taken into consideration, including your income. Generally, you cannot earn more than the following amounts to qualify:
- $27,913 per year for a single applicant
- $44,205 per year for an applicant with a spouse or partner; or with one dependent child
- $63,567 per year for an applicant with a spouse of partner and one dependent child; or with two dependent children
- $72,235 per year for an applicant with a spouse of partner and two dependent children; or with three dependent children
- $80,719 per year for an applicant with a spouse of partner and three dependent children; or with four dependent children
- $90,235 per year for an applicant with a spouse of partner and four dependent children; or with five dependent children. If an applicant has more than five dependent children, or has a spouse or partner and more than four dependent children, their maximum level of income is calculated by adding a further $8,192 for each additional child.
If you qualify for legal aid we will assist you with your application form. To do this, you need to bring the following information into your first appointment with us:
- the address and phone number where you can be contacted at home and/or at work
- your date of birth
- your before-tax income (including wages, and any benefit and ACC payments, and all income)
- any savings you have
- the value of any major assets you own (such as a house or car)
- any money you owe (such as hire purchase or other debts)
- how many dependants you have.
You should also take any letters or documents to do with your case.
You’ll need to tell us about:
- whether you have a partner - if so, their finances will also be recorded in the application for legal aid
- if anything changes in your work, family or financial situation.
